    A Wonderful Experience

    Pros

I loved interning here! I saw some other reviews and I know some people didn't think they got real experience here. But it really depends what department and who you directly report to. I was in the External Affairs Department in Public Outreach and I loved it so much I didn't want to leave. My overseer was more of a mentor to me. She really took the time to give me career advice. I really appreciate that she saw my strengths and tried to give me assignments that I would enjoy. One of my favorite projects was actually a big deal where I got to ghostwrite for a prominent project. One other thing I loved about interning at OCTA is the intern development academy, to this day I still look back on the notes I took there whenever I interview. They even scheduled mock interviews with about 7 different departments where you were pretty much coached on how to improve your interview skills. Even if you end up having a sucky experience, this program alone is worth it. There are so many other pros. You get payed, and not even minimum wage. At one point, all interns in the company even got a raise. They have scholarship programs. And you can stay as an intern up to a year after you graduate. One other thing is they give you so many programs. I participated in a mentorship program and got matched with my mentor based on my interests. There was even a job shadowing program, and one of the interns in the Government Affairs department had the guts to request shadowing the CEO... and he got his wish! I also participated in a Women in Transportation seminar where for a few weeks, I just got to take field trips in related companies, get free lunches and advice from top executives, and THEY STILL PAYED ME MY HOURLY WAGE during this time. It was such an awesome experience. One last thing; they hire from within. So once you're an intern there, you get dibs on job postings and interviews. There was nothing in my department or I would've stayed.

    Cons

I truly can't think of anything. Maybe the fact that there's no free snacks like other companies - but this is because it's a government job and everything in office is taxpayer money. So I'm glad they don't use that for snacks lol.

    Great First Internship

    Pros

OCTA was very flexible with my class schedule. Depending on what department you are in, you will be placed with some great mentors and you can learn a lot from them. Pay is significantly higher than other companies for interns despite it being a government agency. Great coworkers and making friends with other interns in your section is easy.

    Cons

Work can be boring depending on what department you're in. Things take a long time to get done here, so there will be days when you sit at your desk doing essentially nothing for hours. Favoritism and cliques are rampant in this organization. There are few opportunities for interns to move up in the organization as they generally go to more senior employees transferring between sections or departments.

    Good place to work

    Pros

Great co-workers, flex time, challenging work (this is all on the department you work in - some departments are "sleepers" other departments are constantly busy - not look busy - busy). if you reach for it, you can advance in SOME departments OR MOVE to other departments. Great health benefits. People stay a long time at OCTA.

    Cons

OCTA has companies within its company. Different departments and divisions run COMPLETLEY opposite. too much red tape, plenty of people 'looking busy" and takes 10 steps to accomplish what could be done in 2, for job security. But upper management is unaware, Often hard quatliy work is rewarded with more work! that's fine, but its not new work, it work other people cant get in on time, or simply work slow, so they don't do as much.

    Pros

Decent salary. Used to have outstanding benefits package, but that is changing due to increase health insurance costs. Generous vacation and sick leave accruals. Work life balance is emphasized. The majority of the people who work at OCTA are really good people. They are smart, hard-working, friendly and helpful.

    Cons

The organization is very hierarchical and promotions are usually based on whether or not your manager will go to bat for you especially if HR says no. It is all about who you know. This is a very policital environment because the Board of Directors are elected officials.
