All about who you know
24 Feb 2023 - Biological Scientist IV in Tallahassee, FLRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Health insurance and hours are 8-5 Monday through Friday unless on call. We were given temporary help during the pandemic although they were untrained people off the street with no Epi experience or medical training of any kind. Another pro is student loan forgiveness if you want to go back to school however more education does not equal more pay and is instead seen as a threat to senior leadership.
Cons
Upper management makes all the decisions without consulting SMEs and Florida did away with the requirement that they be physicians so most have no knowledge of health at all. It’s friends helping friends to get this high-paying positions. Nothing to do with degrees or knowledge, just politics and connections. Far too much to get done and be able to do it well.

Underpaid and Underappreciated
16 Dec 2022 - Medical Disability Examiner in Jacksonville, FLRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Unlimited supply of free anxiety.
Cons
Incredibly demanding job that should pay about $10k to $15k more than they currently pay based on the amount of effort involved. Every week is a struggle to simply stay above water and close more claims than you were assigned. The few people that can do it are either very experienced, working more than 40 hours, or are cheating the system. I know of more than a few examiners that cut corners or just straight up lie in order to get claims closed. Quality Assurance sits in their ivory tower and return your claims with requests that almost never make a decisional difference. Heaven forbid you should have a life event that causes you to have to take time off, because you will never be able to recover because nobody is helping you with your claims. Office morale is rock bottom. Upper management is disengaged (cough...TC). They cant keep employees (75% of hiring classes quit before a year). It's no wonder Florida is one of the worst states in the country to file for disability. Claimant's are many times waiting almost a year for resolution. Unacceptable.
