Pros
The government really looks after you, your paid on time every time, you have mental health resources left right and center and the training opportunities are awesome. There are heaps of connections to make with incredible people, both in our service and in the wider emergency services. Fire stations are family units, and Fire Rescue NSW is all a wider family, everyone you work with or train with will look after your safety as though you were blood related. There are lots of emergency service events, fund raisers and sports to get involved with too. There's a huge sense of achievement and accomplishment in the work, you really are making a difference.
Cons
You have to up hold the government standards, you cant show bias in politics or publicly talk about your faith in all situations. Your not a fire fighter in your paid hours, your a fire fighter, period. It doesn't turn off. Usually fine but can be a little restricting.
