Pros

-Some of the best people I've ever worked with. They're incredibly smart and passionate & have high EQ. I'm grateful for the chance to work with them. -Lots of education experience including many Teach for America alums and industry veterans. -Great diversity among individual contributors (ethnicity, gender, orientation, age, family status) & a wide variety in where/if they went to college. -Most employees are genuinely mission driven & passionate about access to higher education -No one else offers anything comparable to our platform & our product is well positioned to succeed

Cons

-Management team is much less diverse & there are no female people managers in product, design, engineering & C-level. It's a hard place to be female or a person of color. Your ideas, contributions & experience are devalued. There's no way to bring up these concerns anonymously or without fear of retribution -With no formal HR department, there's no one you can talk to whose trained in confronting bias & who you can trust will keep your conversion confidential. This is *really* hard when you're a younger/more junior employee -You aren't setup for success. You're told what to do but held responsible when it fails. There isn't the trust & autonomy you expect at a small startup -very high turnover - around 10 of 50 employees have left in the past few months. People leave because they're demoralized or don't have autonomy or don't have a way to advance. But even in the face of all these departures leadership hasn't stepped up to fix underlying problems. -House of Cards level politics

As a mission-driven organization, we pride ourselves on our company values, the talent and diversity on our staff, our product, and most of all, on our collective commitment to improving the livelihoods of our student users. We’re glad that you feel positively about these attributes and agree that we have an exceptional team! With that said, we acknowledge that there have been growing pains associated with continued progression and growth at a startup of our size and stature. We’ve actively taken steps to address these challenges over the last several months - including implementing a new professional development and performance playbook to help guide individuals’ career progression and growth, investing in new diversity and inclusion initiatives (both for existing staff and for recruitment at all levels), and hiring more senior leaders to shorten feedback loops and improve the flow of dialogue within teams and across the company. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. As you indicated, inclusion and humility are two of our core values and we strive to be the sort of workplace where employees always feel they have an outlet for voicing their opinions and where company feedback is evaluated and taken to heart. Moving forward, we hope you will feel compelled to share additional ideas and feedback with myself, your manager, or our Director of Operations.

Pros

- Smart, driven co-workers who bring 110% to the table and push you to be your best - Compelling mission in a sector that offers life-changing outcomes for user - Initial product well-designed and engaging

Cons

- Everything the previous reviewer wrote about management issues holding back stability, and the detrimental effect of having no professional HR support, I witnessed and experienced as well; leadership is dysfunctional and highly political - This results in an incredible amount of turnover, throughout all departments within the organization, at remarkable frequency even considering this is a start-up - Lack of user-listening: RaiseMe purports to support low-income and first-generation students who want to go to college, but those cohorts are an after thought in product development and business focus - Much lip service paid to company values and diversity initiatives that always seem to be "in development" and "coming," but never result in goals and action items that hold the company accountable - None of these points will be news to anyone in management reading these reviews, employees have repeatedly shared this feedback only to have their concerns challenged or minimized, with a loose promise that change is coming
