Pros
Retirement plan is the State of Texas Teacher Retirement system give the institution is part of the UT system. You gain a lot of experience in healthcare from direct patient care to hospital operations
Cons
High health insurance premiums for family members. Vesting in retirement system is difficult- if you leave the institution before 5 years you have to withdraw your money and therefore have to pay taxes on it. The TRS system technically matches you 1:1 but you are not vested for the match until you reach 10 yrs of service. Has also undergone various layoffs in the last 10 years. Pay is on lower end for non-medical staff members with few market adjustments
