Pros

Amazing product. Mostly great employees, SMART people. Founders work their tails off and seem to be decent people. Huge potential as a company.

Cons

Some founders have poor interpersonal skills and could mature to become better leaders. They work in silos and don't seem receptive to feedback. They also have issues with each other which affects everyone. To my knowledge, 7 employees out of a small team of ~15 have chosen to leave over a 2.5 year period, for similar reasons. 6 of them are female... I hear there are only 2 or 3 females left. Come on, it's 2023.

KitchenMate Response

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your time at KitchenMate. We really appreciate your positive feedback on the product we’ve built, the heart of our employees, and our work ethic. We do want to respond to some of the negative feedback you provided to shed more light on the matter to provide a full picture for those reading this review and considering a career at KitchenMate. As a food business inside offices, the last 3 years during COVID have been incredibly challenging. The co-founders worked hard to shield employees from the negative effects of these consequences, but unfortunately, we could not prioritize every ask from every employee. We also didn’t over-communicate the whys. We recognize this and are working on improving this. The co-founders are friends and do not have any personal issues with each other. We are aligned on strategies but may not always agree with everything. We think that is a healthy dynamic of diverse thoughts from different perspectives, which usually leads to the most inclusive and sustainable solutions. We do, however recognize that leadership disagreements, if heard by employees, can be stressful and be interpreted as personal issues, and we’re actively working to improve our communication style. Regarding the claim that 7 employees out of 15 have chosen to leave in the past 2.5 years. This is not entirely accurate. We pulled a report from our HR system, and 7 people ended their employment in the past 2.5 years. Of those, 4 found new jobs after working at KitchenMate for 2 years, 2 were laid off, and 1 went on maternity leave and has since returned. Regarding the claim that only 2 or 3 females remain. This is not true. Today, 6 out of 18 staff are female. We have never made any hiring/firing decisions based on one’s gender. It is purely coincidental that we lost some female employees. We feel bad about your sentiment around gender inequalities, and we will be extra diligent about how others could interpret such coincidences in the future. Thanks again for taking the time to write this feedback. We learned from it and are committed to improving our culture to create a more inclusive, diverse, and vibrant workplace.

Pros

A great place to start your career if you're young, like 20s-early 30s. If/when you want a life (partner, balance), it might be time to move on. The expectation is to hustle and grind and the compensation does not match. There's no HR. Things that should not happen happen. Like different treatments/allowances for different employees, information not being shared with everyone, and other things but I won't go into details. Founders have good intentions but some of their requests are ??? You will learn a lot through the work if you're early in your career, but eventually it's not worth the toll it takes and sacrifices you have to make. Most employees leave after a couple of years. When you work somewhere else and get a different experience you realize that it's sort of a crazy place, but it is a startup after all. The 2 or 3 people who have been there for a few years longer have a high tolerance. From what I know, they don't get paid well either.
