There was a really weird ritual where the new hires were brought into a room and asked questions by tenured employees. Initially, I thought this was some harmless fun, we got asked a few ice-breaker questions and then were asked "what song would you pick in karaoke". I don't really karaoke and said the first song that came to my head, the response was booing from everyone in the room. This felt really embarrassing, I froze and was surprised that this was thought to be a suitable response to someone who has just started. I can sense the intention was to break down barriers with 'harmless ribbing and banter' but that was not the impact it had on me.
