Pros

This company does have high standards of work and has some excellent people in the field and low-level management. You can learn about how to do excellent CRM fieldwork in at this company from some, but not all project managers and field personnel. Compensation is slightly better than average in this industry but forget about raises other than cost of living.

Cons

The upper management has extremely poor communication skills and routinely doesn't listen unless you are a favorite employee or have been there 5+ years. They also don't realize that they have created a vitriolic company culture in which mid-level project managers have to "throw people under the bus" when there is a problem. Promotions seem to be based on favoritism not skill. Training is negligible. They expect people to come to the job with all the skills and then fire you if you don't perform to expectations. If it suits them for expedient reasons, upper management will fire you with short notice (<1 week), even if you are salaried. Word of advice- communicate only via email if possible. If not, follow up every telephone and face-to-face conversation with an email reviewing the conversation so everyone is on the same page.

Your feedback and advice have been heard. Our excellent work product is our reputation, but so is the employee experience. So much has improved since 2014. A significant portion of our staff has been with us for 10 years or longer, and they often enjoy mentoring new hires. Training is an important part of our employee commitment. To maintain transparency, we post all job openings on our intranet Employee Portal as well as our website and industry sites.

Pros

Nice people and diverse projects. Excellent full-time benefits package as long as sufficient number of hours are worked. Good part-time opportunities as well.

Cons

Management is not able to deal with confrontation directly or give people constructive criticism that would otherwise let the employees know which areas to improve upon. They appear to be complacent with familiar processes, some of which are not efficient, miss opportunities to use skilled staff, and call on former senior managers that have supposedly "passed the torch" but have more or less continued to be the brains of the operations. Management is also reluctant to place staff into new opportunities. This results in giving the impression that supervisors are two-faced, pretending that employees' job performances are satisfactory, while feeling dissatisfied with the quality of work without any indications that they expect better. This results in employees not realizing that certain areas for improvement are expected, and in turn, disappointment the supervisors.

Thank you for this feedback. Goal setting and written performance evaluations are key to developing an open, honest dialogue with all staff about the quality of their work and their potential to advance within the organization. Applied EarthWorks has developed Supervisory Boot Camp trainings to strengthen the skills of our supervisors and managers. We hope you'll have the opportunity to work with us again in the future.

Pros

Diverse archaeological fieldwork portfolio. Does good and thorough archaeological work. Everyone outside of senior management seems to be more aware than their supervisors. Generally friendly staff.

Cons

No room for growth, no opportunities for training or learning, company seemingly trying to catch a lot of projects but not keeping track of who is doing what., poor communication among project managers, some senior managers take some things too personally.

Thank you for the review. Since 2014, we've made considerable improvements to our business including changes to the Board of Directors, a new President, and a more centralized focus on Human Resources, Finance and Administration. We've also implemented a new computer system across all locations to enhance communication about projects. Things are looking up for Applied EarthWorks!
