I have been working at Assent Compliance full-time

    Pros

Leadership team knows how to speak to their employees and keep them engaged, focused, and prioritized.
Fantastic support system to address any problems you may face.
Younger crowd that appeals to the 20-40 age group in terms of work/life balance.

    Cons

Office space is dull but who cares when we're all working from home

    Advice to Management

It's hard to say anything wrong about management. Even those let go, it's not like it was a 'good riddance'. Nonetheless I appreciate the amount of communication that each member of leadership practices on a daily basis to ensure the Assent ship is smooth sailing.

    Senior Software Engineer Interview

    Average Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Assent Compliance (Ottawa, ON (Canada)) in February 2020.

    Interview

    Four interviews in total.
First was an HR phone call, very basic, just to make sure experience and expectations aligned. All other interviews were on site.

Second was a technical interview with a Software Architect. Scenario based questions, asked about experiences with various technologies and programming languages, it was the most interesting interview of the process. At the end they give a written assessment (in paper) with questions about front-end, back-end, databases, oop, and other programming concepts. The result was used by interviewers in the next interviews to ask more about why I answered certain question in a certain way.

Third was an interview with two different Software Development Managers. Mostly exploring situations about my previous experience and how I handled them and why. They were evaluating my thought process through the scenarios, and discussions as to why I would choose to act one way versus another.

The fourth, and last, was with another Software Development Manager and the VP of Engineering. First part was only with the manager, which was mostly the same as the previous interview, There were some differences, here the manager asked about my strength and weakness self assessment, questions like "How would you estimate the number of gas stations in Canada?" to explore my thought process, "How do you prioritize robustness, scalability, performance?" These questions asked by someone inexperienced interviewing are usually lame and give a bad image of the company, but he employed them well in that he was seeking to understand my thought process, personality and preferences, instead of getting a subjective and biased "right" answer. The second part was with both the manager and the VP, mostly dominated by the VP asking questions and responding to my questions, and giving an overview from his point of view about the situation I would walk into if I got a job offer and accepted.
