I'm smart enough to know that raw intelligence alone isn't enough to solve anything serious. Other things matter just as much, if not more so. In particular: - Learning is about acquiring knowledge and wisdom from others. Wisdom and knowledge gives you the background necessary to find connections between seemingly unrelated concepts -- that is where the true breakthroughs often happen. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "Every man I meet is in some way my superior, and in that I learn from him." - Collaboration is about harnessing diverse skill sets so that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Any serious project requires a serious collaboration. - Perseverance is about not giving up when the going gets tough. No one is smart or wise enough to anticipate all the problems that the world might throw at you. Smarts without the will to succeed generally doesn't result in much.
What I learnt from Targus and understand its current situation. In the first 3 months could be tough time to make a significant change. Understand the current culture, company procedure & process and business practice are essential and important things to do. However what we can immediately be able to do is the change of the staff working behaviors (fundamental culture change) and the business flow, in which we believe it works in every organization if we know the current practice is not functioning or it may even not effectively to support the accomplishment of organization goals. 1) Re-engineering the current team - evaluate their capability and ability, understand their roles and responsibility, putting them into the right job position. Build up Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) concept to the team, the individual mindset change will help the team to accomplish their job more effectively so as to help to achieve company corporate strategic goals. 2）Changing the procurement practices or implementing the innovate flow, like : earlier supplier involvement (ESI) which will help to make current project sourcing practice more efficient and effective. The earlier you let supplier involve in the project stage, the less problem or rework on the project it will be. 3) Defining the prefer and strategic supplier partnership. This is important to help the new project development. The prefer supplier is a long term partnership which they are continuously to support and provide cost effective model to make Targus success in the current marketplace. Instead, to establish a strategic supplier which the supplier would have collaboration with Targus, provides high degree of competitive differentiation for Targus in the marketplace. 4) Implementing the market concept for mechanical and electronic components to the project team. Understand the electronic basic would help to make fast react on the mobile device design of the new project development. Especially, the market is talking about long lead time for all these electronic components but the product life cycle itself is short. Working closely with design eng’r and suppliers would help to speed up the time of the project qualification, so that we will not miss the chance of launching the products to the market. Having said that, to implement the change is a tough journey but possible and it requires staff commitment and times.
