      Online Tutor Interview

      14 Jan 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Wilkes-Barre, PA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at VIPKid (Wilkes-Barre, PA) in Aug 2016

      Interview

All interviews are held on Skype since it is online work from home. I was given a very brief first interview with a staff employee and then I had two follow-up interviews/demo lessons with two current tutors. The first and second interview went well and the information was very clear. Some general questions and details were sent on what I would need to do to prepare for the demo classes that I would conduct to show how I am as a tutor. The students are mostly kindergarten and elementary aged students and they stressed enthusiasm, props, rewards, and hand signals showing praise and direction. The second tutor gave clear instruction and feedback and was engaged in the short demo class that I was conducting from the training materials that they had sent previously. He sent me fantastic feedback indicating that I was a perfect fit for the company and had the experience that the company looks for. He sent me details on what to prepare for my second demo interview. The third interview was very hectic. It was a longer, double demo lesson with materials for two different age ranges and language levels. The tutor who conducted my final demo interview was preoccupied and unable to give eye contact throughout the interview. She was typing notes, taking phone calls, talking to her child who interrupted several times, and we were also interrupted by a loud tv that was on in a nearby area off camera. Every time that she briefly returned her attention to me, I had to try to engage her as if she was a student in my tutor session. She sent notes to me later that she decided that I wouldn't be a good fit for the company since I didn't show her the proper amount of enthusiasm that a child should receive from a tutor. This third demo interview ran about 20 minutes longer than the hour that was scheduled because of the interruptions. She also gave me feedback that I wasn't able to keep my lesson to the proper time limits. Overall, it seemed to me that the company may be a good employer but that they should take more time to train their tutors who interview prospective employees. Below on this form, I indicated the city where I was living during the interviews because the form doesn't allow me to put the location as online or via Skype.

      Interview

VIPKids provides you with a powerpoint and many videos to prepare for interview. The interviewer tends to add expectations during the interview. If interview is passed, then another interview called the Mock Class is scheduled. The interviewer stops the demo lesson often and there are, at times, technical issues due to internet difference in China where interviewer is.

      Question 1

You are asked to take a powerpoint and turn it into a lesson.
