      Senior Network Operations Engineer Interview

      4 Oct 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at The Trade Desk (San Francisco, CA) in Sept 2024

      Interview

The recruiter contacted me regarding this role, and the interview process took three weeks until the final round. However, there was an unusual expectation for the position—they wanted someone with a high level of expertise in both Python coding and networking. Essentially, they were trying to combine the roles of a Software Engineer and a Network Engineer, but were only offering the salary for one.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The role is more focused on software engineering, leaving little room for a Network Engineer to contribute their ideas to the team. In the first round, the questions were all about networking. They gave me an open network scenario, and you had to explain how the traffic flows and what protocols were required. The first round was fine. However, the second interview round was a bit confusing. They provided an open canvas and expected me to design the entire Trade Desk network from scratch in just one hour. It wasn't overly difficult, but there were no clear instructions, and the interviewer didn’t seem to have a proper framework for evaluating candidates. The third round was onsite and felt like a complete waste. I expected to be given a coding task where I could demonstrate my Python skills, but instead, they presented their own code. I was only asked to discuss what to add or remove from it. It was confusing because I was unfamiliar with their coding style, which made it difficult to follow. Overall, the process felt like a waste of my time and energy. I believe they should rename this position to 'Senior DevOps Engineer' and focus on hiring software engineering candidates since they clearly gave less emphasis to networking concepts.
