      Product Designer Interview

      25 Apr 2018
      Anonymous employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Splunk (San Francisco, CA) in Mar 2018

      Interview

All in all, the offer letter was only active for 20 minutes and then was RESCINDED without any reason. If you get an offer, do not be happy so early, they can withdraw it maybe before or after you sign the offer. It is hard to find anybody in the interview process too. You need to be the person who drives the process. Black box and NO RESPONSE all the time. I applied online for a designer position here. The hiring manager contacted me and said would like to talk with me. It conflicted with another meeting. So I would like to have a reschedule. They said they will. Then after 15 days and I sending emails again and again, there is NO RESPONSE. I asked my friend what I should do and she said she had the same NO RESPONSE experience in 2015. Then I saw a Linkedin posting from a designer A and he said he would like to talk with me. The conversation went well and he said he would like to move forward with me. After 10 days, NO RESPONSE. I followed up again. After another 5 days, finally the hiring manager (the same one) contacted me and said their recruiter will contact me. I waited for a few days and found the recruiter Linkedin. I am the one to drive the whole process. He said he will let his coordinator contact me. Finally I got the onsite interview scheduled. The coordinator listed 20 interviewers to me. I was shocked and asked for the schedule and format. She still did not understand what I mean. Finally she gave me the schedule (turned out it is not accurate at all). I went to onsite interview and the designers are nice to me though. The other director is nice and gave me a tour. At the end of that day, I knew I would get an offer. I got a verbal offer a day after the onsite interview. The recruiter called me and said we had a couple of candidates. You want this offer or not? Is it weird to say things like this? He gave me a package number and asked me whether I would accept it. He said I need your verbal commitment, there is another person who is willing to sign. I said yes though I felt being pushed and threatened. I got the written offer letter at 4:40pm and it expired at 5:00pm at the same day. I sent email immediately back to ask whether there is something wrong. NO RESPONSE. I emailed the recruiter and asked about this. NO RESPONSE. I called the recruiter and he said the offer has expired. He yelled at me and asked me why I did not sign it before it expired. I said it expired before I opened the email. He was very very rude. The other day, I got an email from the person who sent me the offer letter, "I did not know why and how this happened. I extended the offer letter deadline to the end of today". After 4 hours at noon, the recruiter called me and said they will withdraw the offer. I asked to communicate with the hiring manager and got a No. I tried to know why. I sent emails to the hiring manager, the designer who interviewed me before and the recruiter. NO RESPONSE. It is like a blackbox. It is lucky for me to have another offer to take. If I signed the offer, resigned from my current employer and then the offer got rescinded, I would be in very very difficult situation. I still did not understand what happened by now. I just shared my story so that other people can be better prepared for this and will not suffer the same as me.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Splunk in Nov 2024

      Interview

I cold applied on their website and was contacted by a recruiter around a month later. The interview process was around 6 weeks long: Recruiter screen - 15min Hiring manager interview - 45min Director interview (HM's boss) - 45min Senior UX Designer interview - 45min Director interview - 45min Software engineer interview - 45min Nearly one month after my last interview I was sent an automated rejection email (my follow up email to the recruiter was ghosted). This is one of the worst interview processes I've participated in. I was asked to present a case study in 4/5 interviews despite receiving no indication that was part of the interview beforehand. Many of the questions the interviewers asked were the same, it was unclear to me why these were individual interviews instead of a panel. The recruiter was impossible to get in touch with and didn't respond to a single one of my follow ups throughout the process. Despite all this, everyone on the team was delightful to talk to and seemed to have a lot of good to say about the company and the work they're doing. My read is that this seems like a good place with an awful hiring process.

      Product Designer Interview

      1 Sept 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Denver, CO

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Splunk (Denver, CO)

      Interview

The interview process was very methodical. The design manager who was hiring provided realistic expectations. Be aware that the interview can be very technical and read the technical requirements. Design maturity seems to be a work in progress. I suspect it unlikely that designers will find themselves working closely on a team with other designers, rather you may be supported by a central leader and tasked with culture change. That said, the team seemed very smart and savvy and I have seen great UX and visual design come from Splunk! I did not leave with a bitter feeling rather a feeling that it might be hard for any product designer to live up to the technical expectations the engineering-driven team seems to have.

      Question 1

A few things to emphasize in your talk track 1. what YOU did: spend the time talking about your specific work, not using the royal "we" or noting the team-at-large accomplishments 2. look for any parallels to projects you could see Splunk having similar issues

      Product Designer Interview

      20 Dec 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at Splunk in Sept 2023

      Interview

I applied online with an employee referral and was contacted shortly after applying. The process lasted 7 weeks and consisted of pretty traditional interview activities like video interviews with the hiring manager and experienced designers on the team, a portfolio presentation, and a virtual on-site. Every person I interacted with was kind, helpful, and seemed to share a common goal. Additionally, it was revealed that Splunk would be acquired during my interviews. I was disappointed to not receive an offer, but I was downright disheartened to have shared so much time with this team only to receive zero feedback at the end.
