I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at South Bend Tribune (South Bend, IN) in Aug 2013
Interview
Basically a woman took me in a room, she was late, but I wasn't particularly bothered, I understand how customer service can be. All the standard interview questions. Not even any surprises.
Online application, followed up with an interview and a writing test. The interviewers were approachable editors, and I was not intimidated by them. They wanted to know about my journalism experience and asked me questions about my writing experience and my ability to handle deadline pressure. My impression of the newsroom was that it was a friendly place and that they gave reporters artistic license, but when I asked staff writers about their work lives in private, they told me they were overworked and underpaid. This newspaper does not offer competitive compensation, and you should know that going in.

Question 1
The writing test was challenging because it was a reporting assignment which had to be completed on a tight deadline. I was not given a choice about when to take the test, and I had to take some time off from work. However, the writing prompt was engaging, and I thought the test allowed me to demonstrate my aptitude as a journalist.
