      Software Engineer Interview

      29 Sept 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Science 37 in Sept 2021

      Interview

30 minute call with technical manager followed by coding challenge. When I first had the phone call, I was excited and hopeful about the company. Unfortunately, the atrocious experience I had with the coding portion left a bad taste in my mouth, and I do not recommend any engineers interview with Science37. The coding challenge was a week long take home assignment, requiring responsive design, with a list of functionalities that the reviewers were looking for. If they liked the code, it would be taken to a panel code review. I spent 5 hours a day on this assignment, including the labor day weekend, as I wanted to hit every checkmark on the requirements. The only requirement I did not complete was the unit testing, but beyond that, I was really proud of the submission. The problems began after I submitted my code. I did not hear anything for a week after submitting my code. I sent a check in email asking for an update - and there was no response. Another week later, I email them again and again, no response. A total of three weeks later I ask my recruiter to message them because I've been pretty much ghosted at this point, and I get a response a couple days later. The response was less than two sentences long, with just a list of negatives, completely ignoring anything good about the submission. I matched the design document exactly, even taking color picking tools to get the hex codes of backgrounds and font colors. I made sure to check for numerous edge cases, and commented my code well. It felt as if my application as an after thought, it felt as if the hiring managers at Science37 were too busy and had an engineer who was also too busy look at the code for 5 minutes and not even test it. This is completely unprofessional, and frankly unacceptable. How can you ask a candidate to give you a week of their time, yet you take almost a month to give feedback, and at that, extremely short feedback. I never received any email responses directly from the company regarding my submissions, everything I got I received from my recruiter. Do not apply to Science37.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Science 37

      Interview

There are 7 steps. The first 2 are ATS and recruiter evaluation. Then a screening call by one of the team leads, which is really a zoom interview. Then if passed the screening, you interview with 3 other team members and managers in a single day on zoom. If you pass that, then you have a final interview with the highest manager for that department, in relation to the level you are coming in at. They will ask technical questions as well as thought process to see team fit.

What is an example of a time where you rolled up your sleeves or leaned in even when not asked to do so?

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Science 37 in Aug 2021

      Interview

Initial 30min phone call with manager to go over the role and my experience that went well. The next phase was a code challenge and then if they liked the code, a chance to demo it. I was given a week to complete and needed every minute of it. I was a little nervous after turning it in based on feedback they had given past candidates that did not pass that felt extremely nit picky. I found out the next day that I did not pass their code standards with a one sentence comment delivered by the recruiter. I've been formally trained by the distributor of the software they were testing me on and I disagree with their feedback. Regardless it showed how little they cared about their applicants when they expect them to do a weeks worth of work and only provide a single sentence of feedback. I felt like disregarded trash. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere.
