Pros:
The facility itself is beautiful and well-maintained. Modern building with a nice atmosphere.
Cons:
The receptionist position was offered at minimum wage ($17.60/hr), which is challenging in today’s economic climate, especially for roles requiring administrative experience.
More concerning: I was asked to come in for a two-hour unpaid “observation shift” before receiving a job offer. Under Ontario’s Employment Standards Act, all work - including observation periods, training, and trial shifts, must be compensated. Requiring unpaid labour from candidates is illegal, regardless of whether they are ultimately hired.
When this unpaid shift was scheduled during a severe snowstorm - with over 60 accidents reported, all schools and universities closed, and police advising the public to stay off the roads, declined to risk my safety for uncompensated work.
Advice to Management:
Review your hiring practices with HR or legal counsel to ensure compliance with Ontario labor laws. Expecting candidates to work without pay is illegal. Expecting them to do so in dangerous weather conditions is both unsafe and unreasonable.
