    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took a week. I interviewed at Naughty Dog.

    Interview

The person in charge of setting up my interview sent me an e-mail looking for my availability over the next two weeks, They got back to me the next business and scheduled the interview for the very next day. The interview was what I would consider fairly standard given what the listing was asking for. The questions fell roughly into three categories basic algorithms, C++ understanding, and math. The interview itself took around 40 minutes and was fairly typical for a game programming interview.

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Naughty Dog (Santa Monica, CA (US)).

    Interview

They sent out a test edit(albeit filled with errors).
They responded really quickly and setup a phone call and then a relaxed phone call lead to a very intense in-person interview. During my in-person interview I was impressed by half the team and discouraged by the other half. While on the tour of their studio I saw my resume and website on the computers for a few of the guys that would later interview me. Thought it was rather late in the game for them to just now be reviewing my stuff but whatever. The interview related a lot to my test which was rather awhile ago at this point. I think they produce great quality work here however I think this place suffers from production hell. They tried to sell me on the idea that "we encourage overtime" as if that's a selling point? If you're good at your job you shouldn't stay let just to prove your worth; you should be able to finish your work in 8 hour day.

    Game Designer (Gameplay Scripter Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Naughty Dog in December 2018.

    Interview

A Gameplay Scripter interview at Naughty Dog is what I would expect out of a Gameplay Programmer role at any other company. However, this is not a negative as it shows that Naughty Dog holds its applicants to a high standard. I got an e-mail from a recruiter and we scheduled a technical phone screen for the following week. The call lasted an hour and had questions involving 3D math, programming, and experiences with scripting things. At the end of the interview, the person who interviewed me said I should wait a few weeks to hear back, but I got an automated rejection e-mail the next day. I learned a lot from the interview and I would advise anyone who applies to be a scripter at Naughty Dog to prepare to be challenged.

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Naughty Dog.

    Interview

For me it was a 3 step process. First quick phone screen, longer more in depth second phone interview, and then an in person. Each phase was very math oriented with some general programming concepts mixed in. The recruiter moved me through the process very quickly.

    Localization Quality Assurance Tester Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Naughty Dog (Santa Monica, CA (US)) in September 2018.

    Interview

I applied online and the recruiter responded about 2 weeks later. We scheduled an on-site interview for the following week. I met with the QA Manager and Localization Manager for about 1 hour. Their questions regarded my previous QA and Localization experience and were pretty basic. The QA manager threw me a bit of a curveball when he asked what one of my previous supervisors may have to say about me that is negative - that got me trembling a bit but I think I responded well shortly after. We then discussed details to the job, such as the hourly rate (which was slightly above minimum wage), overtime, and duration of the contract. At the end of the interview, the Loc Manager had me translate 10 basic UI strings in a questionnaire webtool which was pretty easy. Two days later, the QA manager reached out to me and asked me to schedule a further onsite practical test for them to evaluate my QA skills utilizing their software with an instruction sheet. I responded that I would be interested in the job, however, we weren't even in the same ballpark in terms of compensation. This ended my candidacy for the position. Overall, it was a positive experience. Although we did not come to an agreement, we treated each other respectfully and were clear about our expectations, which ultimately did not harmonize.
