      Online Advertising Specialist Interview

      25 Jun 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Jane App (New York, NY)

      Interview

This is a tricky review to write, because prior to my chat with the Co-Founder, the interview process was excellent. Communication was consistent and prompt throughout the process. Everyone I spoke with was personable/friendly, which is welcomed in remote interviews. The Co-Founder, not so much. She wasn't very personable, seemed distracted on the call (or high? Or rude? I couldn't tell, but she seemed to be disengaged...), she didn't seem to understand the basic concepts of the role she was hiring for, nor the transferable skills and training that are intertwined with spending several years in digital advertising and tech companies. Having someone NOT experienced in digital media tell me what my experience and "passion" is... is just laughable and egocentric. If you can't grasp that ALL digital media comes down to strategy, and that most of us in digital media are highly tech-savvy with ALL platforms, maybe you shouldn't be the one interviewing people for that type of role. But I digress. The job was listed as "Online Advertising Specialist"; however the job title should actually be "SEM/SEO/PPC Specialist". It was inaccurate and misleading, since they were not looking for an Online Advertising Specialist, they were looking for someone to run Google Ads/Search campaigns. Steps: - Call with Marketing, and then an Excel-based task to analyze data and present it. - Call with Marketing and other team member (I believe head of community?) to present. - Call with Customer Support, as their roles are close-working with advertising/marketing. - Call with Co-Founder. Overall, I believe this would be a GREAT company to work for, as long as the Co-Founder likes you. I 100% got the vibe from her that if you say or do something she doesn't love, you'll be on the bad end of her "vibe". So really, it's a blessing I didn't get an offer since I'm pretty sure I wouldn't enjoy having to report into her on a weekly basis. I wish the best for the company either way. :)

Hi there, Ali here - co-founder. We have obviously met. Oh my word! I am SO sorry that this was the impression you got from our call. I deeply apologize for making you feel this way and that I came across as disinterested or rude (and ego-centric). That's really inexcusable. When you only get one interaction with someone there can't be off days. My goal is that everyone always walks away from any interaction with Jane as "a friend of Jane" and clearly the team did a great job at that but I did not. Thanks for sharing your experience with me so that I can improve and I hope you find the perfect position for you with a team and leader that respects and appreciates you and your skill. I really appreciate the feedback and will make sure no one else ever has to leave an interview feeling this way. With deep regret, Ali
