I was invited to participate in a virtual interview for a contract instructional designer position. However, I was shocked when the hiring manager casually asked me what my ethnic background was at the very start of the interview. This is regarded as an illegal question if it has nothing to do with the role and its requirements (which she even confirmed it did not while asking it). This is also why it is optional to respond to this question when applying for a position. So I was very surprised and uncomfortable when it was asked. When I asked her why she was asking this, she said she was curious because of my name. The hiring manager has over 14 years of experience with the company but seemed to lack situational awareness. Needless to say, I did not get the position.
Is anyone at Fannie Mae actually providing refresher training to these veteran hiring managers on how to properly conduct interviews, or does their seniority not require it?
