Old technology. Profits doled out to please a few shareholders instead of reinvesting in business which badly needs investments to survive industry wide changes
I worked at ALDI full-time for more than a year
The staff are usually a lively bunch with good banter. Some of the deputy managers at my store were very empathetic and caring but these never seem to be the ones getting promoted to higher... positions. Some stores will allow you to ask other staff for cover last minute. The customers in my store were (mainly) lovely people, and were great to have chats with. The management and other staff members will back you 100% if the customer is being unfair or even abusive.
Management will keep promising you promotions but it's just a way to keep you there. If you pick up your phone once to cover a shift due to illness, they will always call you asking to cover and... will get very annoyed and try to guilt-trip you if you say no. The management will pick and choose when to be nice to you and when to snap at you, for no apparent reason. Women are ALWAYS put on the tills, this company does not believe that the women can do all of the shop floor jobs even though a lot of the women in my store were actually quicker and more efficient than some of the men on the floor. If you complain about this, they will put you on tills more often. The targets you have to hit are tough sometimes, and they expect you to be able to do 50 things at once and will get annoyed if you have even one forgetful moment in a blue moon. If you complain about a member(s) of staff using vulgar and offensive language with colleagues, the management will not take it seriously and you will be left to deal with feeling uncomfortable at work. If you are genuinely ill, they will most likely not believe you and you will be interrogated and made to feel guilty.
Advice to Management
Look at your staff turnover rates, and start treating people with more respect. Set clear expectations, and don't make promises that you aren't willing to follow through with. Be gentle with people... who are going through a rough time.
