What does a Legislative Analyst do?
Legislative assistants provide various support services to lawmakers. They assist legislators in the lawmaking process, which often consists of a mix of research, communications, public relations, and administrative staff tasks. They conduct legal research and constituent surveys to gather important information to help craft legislation. Legislative assistants may prepare reports and briefings that keep legislators up-to-date on important issues to their constituents and pertinent matters with the potential to impact policy-making.
Legislative assistants track the progress of a bill by monitoring committee hearings and co-sponsorship developments. They meet with constituents to know their concerns and respond to inquiries and serve as liaisons between legislators and government agency personnel, state officials, community organizers, and other interest groups. They supervise interns and volunteers and organize the legislator’s schedule and travel arrangements. They work with other legislative staff to set up town hall meetings and district events. Legislative assistants need a minimum bachelor's degree in political science, communications, public administration, or another related field.
