What does an Accounts Payable do?

Accounts payable specialists are responsible for managing and maintaining financial records, with a particular emphasis on processing invoices and other bills. They review and reconcile invoices, obtain any necessary approvals, and initiate payment. They use a variety of AP software programs and other electronic tools to allow for fast and efficient processing and ensure accurate recordkeeping. They prepare year-end summaries, statements, and tax forms such as 1099s. They perform a range of general bookkeeping and accounting tasks.

Accounts payable specialists typically have at least a high school diploma, although additional training or education is helpful. They commonly have a background in accounting or administrative support, and ideally have experience in roles involving the processing of invoices. Proficiency with office software programs like Excel is generally expected.
